Frequently Asked Questions

We are considered an out of network provider for all insurances. However, we are an “insurance friendly” practice. This means that we will provider you with a superbill for your sessions that you can submit to your insurance. Most of our client received between 30-80% of their session fees back. Please read the following FAQs about fees, how to submit to insurance, and what to ask you insurance before starting therapy.

Investment

Therapy is an investment on both the part of the client and the clinician. As a client, you are investing time, energy, trust, and finances into this process. As therapists, we are investing time both in and out of session, energy, care, collaboration, experience and continual learning, into this process. Our rates are set so that we can maintain the highest quality of care for our clients.

Fully Licensed Clinicians

Our fully licensed clinicians have completed their masters, and over 2000 hours of clinician work. Most have extra certifications and have an abundance of experience in their respective focus areas.

Insurance

We are an out-of-network provider, which means we do not participate in any insurance plans directly. Most people have out-of-network benefits through their insurance company. Some people can be reimbursed anywhere from 30-80%. You can check your benefits by calling the number on the back of your insurance card. We provide you with a monthly superbill for services that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. You are responsible for payment at the time services are rendered.

Advantages to working with an Out of Network provider may include the following:

1) Increased confidentiality and privacy. We don’t have to submit everything to your insurance company.

2) Wider pool of therapists who fits with your personality and clinical needs.

3) A more personalized therapeutic experience, as your insurance company will not dictate number of sessions or treatment plan.

How do I know if I have out of network benefits?

The best way to figure out you benefits is to call the number on the back of your insurance card.

Questions to ask your insurance company are as follows:

  • Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health coverage? Am I able to use these benefits for telehealth?

  • What is my out-of-network deductible? How much of my deductible has been met this year?

  • What percentage of outpatient psychotherapy sessions are covered per session?

  • How much will I be reimbursed for a 60 minute initial evaluation (CPT Code: 90791) and 60 minute ongoing individual therapy 60 minute session (CPT Code: 90837)?

  • How do I submit claim forms for reimbursement?

  • How long does it take for me to receive reimbursement?

Why don’t you take insurance?

Insurance, simply put, can be a mess. Without insurance in the mix, both the client and the therapist are in more control of the progress of treatment. Insurance will approve a couple sessions at a time, and only for certain diagnosis. If you want to use insurance we have to give you a billable diagnosis. With self-pay, the client is in control of the treatment, the therapist, the length of treatment, & what you want out of therapy. Consulting with your therapist on non-psychiatric issues that are important to you that aren’t billable by insurance, such as learning how to cope with life changes, gaining more effective communication techniques for your relationships, increasing personal insight, and developing healthy new skills. With self-pay, your diagnosis will not be listed on a medical record that could follow you into future endeavors.

Is Parent Coaching covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, parent coaching is not a service that is covered by insurance either in network or out of network. However, you may be able to use your HSA card or flexible savings account to pay for services. You can check with the company that provides these to you and ask what is allowable.

Do you see people virtually?

Yes! We use a HIPPA compliant Telehealth platform for those clients who wish to be sen virtually. Generally, all parent coaching sessions are done virtually to support busy schedules. Please note at this time you must be in Virginia in order for me to see you via Telehealth. Since Parent Coaching is not covered under insurance, we are able to see coaching clients located outside the state of Virginia. Contact me to learn more.

Do I have to be good at art to do art therapy?

Absolutely not! We welcome all people and levels of artists. In art therapy, the process is more important than the product we create. Oftentimes the art we make is messy and not what we think of when we think of “art.” We believe in the power of the creative process and invite all clients to make art, but you don’t have to if you don’t want it.

What do you mean by neurodivergent?

Neurodivergence is a social term. It simply seems that people’s brains, bodies, and sensory systems operate in different way. Unfortunately our society only makes room for some people. People who don’t fall into this category are neurodivergent. It is not a diagnosis. We still have to use diagnosis labels if we are submitting to insurance but we try to move beyond medical model labels to help our clients understand how they function and move in the world. To Learn more please visit our page on neurodivergence.

Will you work with me if I am not neurodivergent?

Yes! While our focus is on neurodivergent people we welcome all people in our practice. Our belief is that social justice oriented therapy helps everyone and harms no one.

What ages do you see for therapy?

We provide art therapy and play therapy to children ages 4+. We work with children, teens, young adults, and adults.

What locations do you serve?

We offer mental health services, therapy, art therapy, play therapy, and counseling to the northern Virginia area. We see most of our clients from Herndon, Reston, Chantilly, Manassas, Great Falls, McLean, Fairfax, and Centerville. We also offer tele-heath therapy for those who can’t make it to the office.

Do you have particular diagnoses that you work with?

We provide mental health therapy, art therapy, and play therapy for people experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autism, OCD, oppositional diffident disorder (we don’t use this term), trauma and PTSD, Bi-polar disorder, borderline personality disorder, difficulties with self-harm or suidcial ideation, learning disorders, and more. We recognize that medical model language (diagnosis) does capture the entirety of a person’s experience and practice from a neurodivergent affirming lens. We respect our client’s right to self-diagnosis and choice to use diagnosis language or not.

Payment, Credit Card, and Cancellation Policies

We accept all major credit cards and HSA cards as forms of payment. Payment is done through a convenient and secure online platform. Payment is due in full at time of service.

To ensure a seamless therapy experience, we kindly request that clients provide a valid credit card on file during the initial session. Your card information will be securely encrypted, and it will only be charged for appointment payment or in the event of a missed appointment or late cancellation as outlined in the cancellation policy.

If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure you cancel at least 48 hours beforehand to avoid late cancelation or no-show fees. If you cancel with less than 48 hours' notice, or you do not show up for your scheduled appointment, and you have not notified me at least 48 hours in advance, you will be required to pay the full cost of the session. We understand that life happens, we get sick, our kids get sick, and there are emergencies. If you need to cancel for an emergency, we charge a flat reduced fee of $50.
